Coloured Vintage Jars DIY
I love the look of old mason jars. The beautiful pale greens and blues - I find them simply gorgeous! However, they can be very hard to find (and expensive).
I found a wonderful idea on Beach House in the City - a simple way to make your own vintage jars! And why stop there? By changing the colour of food coloring, you can make an entire rainbow of gorgeous glass containers. It couldn’t be easier!
You will need:
- Glass Jars (from the dollar store, or empty ones from home)
- Food Coloring
- Foam Brush
- White Glue
What you do:
Stir together equal parts glue and water. I used 2 tablespoons of each, which was way more than enough for my two small jars.
Add a few drops of food coloring. I used a mix of 2 drops blue and 2 drops green.
Apply a light coat to the outside of your glass jar. You could choose to swish the mixture on the inside of your jar, but will not be able to put anything wet into it. I chose to put flowers in my jars, so opted for painting the outside.
Allow it to dry. It will look streaky - but don’t worry. I painted my first coat with the jar upside down (so I could put one coat on the bottom of the jar) and my second coat right side up (so I could hold from the inside of the jar and get every little speck covered).
Apply a thin second coat, and again allow to dry. This time when it dries it looks much better. Streak free!
The best part of all - should you tire of the colour, simply wash with warm soapy water and start again.
It’s as easy as that. A great craft to do with your kids, or on your own. These jars would be lovely filled with flowers and given as a gift. They make a gorgeous centerpiece too! Also, the light streaming through them on a window ledge is simply beautiful.
No one would ever guess that these gorgeous vintage jars cost so little!
