  • Eating healthy is important. We all know that. But it can also be expensive, so it’s great to know of some inexpensive places to buy healthy food.

One unlikely and surprising place is actually the dollar store. Believe it or not, there are healthy name-brand foods that can be found at Dollarama. Here is a list of some food items I found at my store:

9 Name Brand Food Items Found at Dollarama

    1. Granola Bars

Though perhaps high in sugar, granola bars are a healthy alternative to many other candy bars and snacks. My dollar store even had Quaker Chewy brand granola bars for $2.

    2. Canned Vegetables

I was impressed with the two brand names for canned vegetables found at Dollarama. Both Aylmer and Primo had a variety of canned tomatoes!

    3. Soups

There were many, many different types and brands of soup available. I was impressed to see a few Heinz soups. The Heinz tomato soup cans were 2 for $1. Primo soups were also available. Campbell’s spaghetti was available in the same section.

    4. Applesauce

Applesauce packaged in individual serving sizes make great lunch snacks. Mott’s Fruitsations were available in a few different flavours for $1.50 for 6 cups (cheaper than places like Walmart!).

    5. Pizza Sauce

There were many different brands of tomato sauce and pasta sauce at Dollarama. I was impressed to see many different kinds of Primo.

    6. Rice

Uncle Ben’s Fast and Fancy rice was available for just $1. There were many kinds to choose from. Rice makes a great and inexpensive side dish to many meals. I like the Uncle Ben’s brand and love how quickly it can be cooked.

    7. Mashed Potatoes

I had no idea Betty Crocker Mashed Potatoes were sold at Dollarama. I’m not really a fan of the packaged potatoes, but do acknowledge how quick and convenient they are.

    8. Protein Bars

PowerBar protein bars were located beneath the granola bars. I’m not sure of this is regularly stocked or if it’s a once in awhile item, but $1.50 per bar is a good price for this item (unless of course you have a coupon).

    9. Condiments

Though not really healthy, these can be used to disguise healthy food to get your kiddos to eat them! Heinz BBQ sauce was available in many varieties for $1.25. French’s Mustard was another good find!

When looking for healthy foods at the dollar store, it’s important to keep in mind a few things. First of all, remember the sizes may be smaller than at the regular grocery store - so don’t get tricked thinking something is a great deal when it’s really only a smaller size. Always do price comparisons.

Second of all, watch for added salt and sugar. This is generally added to give foods a longer shelf life and make it taste better - but makes it much less healthy. Finally, consider buying items with less packaging. Generally, if an item has more packaging (like being wrapped in individual sizes) it will be more expensive.

Putting the food into containers and wrappers yourself can save you significant money in the long run.

It’s amazing what you can find when you look for it. I went to the dollar store looking for healthy food, wondering if there would be more than a few canned tomatoes. I was very impressed with my findings! My dollar store seemed to have plenty of stock and cans without dings or dents.

I was also impressed with all of the name brands. Well worth the trip!
