Dollarama

We want to make sure that we are sharing the latest and greatest deals at local dollar stores across Canada. In an effort to do this much better than doing it on our own, we are asking for your help.

We are going to make it exciting, though - submit your latest dollar store finds and you could win gift cards each month!

    Here’s how it works:

Send your dollar store deal to [email protected] for it to be shared on the site.

Please include the following with your submission:

    • Name of the dollar store you purchased the item.
    • City and province of the store.
    • The cost of the item.
    • Any details of the item that you think are necessary to mention.
    • Please, only 1 photo per item. So if you find 2 great deals, send 2 photos.

You will earn 1 entry for every deal you submit. At the end of each month, we will do a random drawing of all entries and one lucky person will win a $50 Dollarama gift card!

That’s all there is to it! So start sharing your deals for your chance to win free gift cards!

  • Dollarama has been offering name brand items for awhile now, and people are always asking - how does Dollarama get these name brand items? How can they afford to sell these products so cheaply?

Have you found yourself wondering the same thing? I know I have. When I visited my local Dollarama last week, I saw a ton of different brands, including Windex, Dove, Colgate, Playtex, Huggies - and so many others. It’s like shopping at Walmart or Shoppers Drug Mart - but cheaper!

So how does Dollarama get brand name items?

Dollarama deals directly with the manufacturers. There are no middlemen or distributors at all. Most of the brand name items that they sell at Dollarama are items that are changing packaging, overstock items or merchandise that is being discontinued.

In some cases, the packaging is smaller than you would find in any other store that sells these brand name items, but not always. I have seen many full size items at my local Dollarama!

    credit

There are some manufacturers that have products created (in smaller packaging) specifically for sale at Dollarama.

Another reason that these items may be priced at dollar store prices ($3 or less), is because they expire soon (often in no more than 6 months). This applies to food and beverages, but also to other items with a shelf life, like health & beauty items.

One thing to keep in mind when you see brand name items at Dollarama, is if you want it - buy it, and buy extra, because you likely won’t see the item again. This is more true for food, beverages, household cleaners and health & beauty items - but other items may disappear too.

Some of the best bargains you can find at dollar stores are those name brand items at a fraction of their original retail cost. So snatch them up while you still can!

  • As I have mentioned previously, we are doing a lot of fixing up in our home. One of the least expensive ways we have spruced up is by painting. And we have done a ton of it! From ceilings to walls - very little has been left untouched.

I have seen the paintbrushes at Dollarama, but I was hesitant to try them. I have painted with “cheap” brushes before and they would leave bristles in my wet paint, which I would then have to pick out (or sand out if I missed them) and re-paint. Not at all worth the few dollars I saved.

But I was willing to give the brushes from Dollarama a try.

I was refinishing the base of my kitchen table. It is a rather inconspicuous place to paint, so I thought I would give the dollar store brushes a try. I bought two brushes at Dollarama. The ProPainter Brush was $2 and the Duramax Brush was $1.

I chose to review three specific areas with these brushes:

    1. Loss of bristles
    2. Paint coverage
    3. Clean up of the brushes

Before I began painting, I gave a light pull on the bristles, to see if any loose ones would fall out, and to give me a heads up for what I may be in for! To my surprise, not a single bristle was loosened from the ProPainter brush. The Duramax brush was a different story. I easily pulled out many bristles:

I continued to gently pull out any loose bristle, until my pulling resulted in no more bristles coming out of the brush.

Then I began painting. Both brushes provided good paint coverage. I was impressed with the lack of streaks. Both brushes provided even strokes and a nice layer of paint evenly to my table.

The Duramax brush did lose a few bristles throughout the paint job. I caught about 3 while painting, and have noticed 1 more now that the paint has dried. Not too bad for the small area I was doing, but could be problematic if doing a large area.

I was very impressed with the ProPainter Brush. It did not lose a single bristle.

The ProPainter brush also washed clean very quickly and easily. The Duramax brush was a bit more challenging to clean. I could not seem to get all of the paint out of it, and ended up tossing it in the trash.

    My personal thoughts:

    The Duramax Brush

    • Lost a lot of bristles, both before I began painting and throughout the painting process. It reminded me of other “cheap” brushes I had used in the past.
    • Painted evenly and did provide good paint coverage.
    • Did not clean up very well. The paint was very difficult to wash out of the brush.

    The ProPainter Brush:

    • Did not lose a single bristle, either before or during painting.
    • Provided good paint coverage and an even coat of paint.
    • Cleaned up quickly and easily.

I would highly recommend spending the extra dollar and purchasing the Pro Painter brush. You will still be saving a bundle from avoiding the hardware stores. I truly wish I had tried these brushes sooner!

  • I was thrilled when I found the galvanized metal buckets at Dollarama. I love them! The buckets are offed in a variety of sizes, ranging in price from $1.50 - $2.50 each.

Galvanized metal means that a thin coating of zinc oxide has been applied to help prevent the buckets from rusting. So these buckets not only look nice, but they are also very durable.

Having trouble thinking of how you could use these buckets? Here is some inspiration:

    1. Toy Storage.

Here is a tutorial on how to transform these buckets into (quiet!) toy buckets.

    2. Flower Pot.

If you buy the biggest size of buckets available at Dollarama, you can pop an entire pot of flowers right inside the bucket. Since these are galvanized, you could choose to keep your flowers indoors or outdoor. You could also buy a smaller size bucket and use it as a “vase” for fresh cut flowers.

    3. Gift Basket.

These buckets provide a creative way to give a creative gift! For example, you could fill your bucket with gardening gear for the family gardener. Some gloves, a little shovel and rake, spray bottle, maybe even a plant, and you are set!

    4. Birthday Cake.

I am not sure about actually cooking in this bucket, but as soon as I saw these buckets at the store, I thought about using one for a “dirt cake“.

Bake a chocolate cake and cut into cubes. In a small-medium sized bucket, layer the cake, chocolate pudding, chocolate mousse, and Oreo cookie crumbs. Do this until the bucket is almost full and top with gummy worms (and maybe a sand shovel or two).

    5. Use as a cooler.

Fill your bucket with ice and pop your beverage of choice inside. Keep poolside, or out on the deck at your next get together for a fun way to keep your drinks cold.

These buckets can be painted to be personalized as well. Little hand prints of grandchildren and filled with flowers would make a lovely gift for a grandmother. Hand prints or names of students would make a lovely gift for a teacher. You are only limited by your imagination.

These buckets are practical, durable, and look great. Another wonderful find from my local dollar store!

What do you use these buckets for?

  • I always used to find wall art from dollar stores to be tacky. I never purchased it because I thought it looked (and felt) cheap.

So, imagine my surprise when I purchased not one, but TWO pieces of wall art from Dollarama last week!

The quality is very nice, I love the colours and the quotes are both very fitting for our family.

At $3 a piece, I scooped them both up. Now I just have to find the perfect place to hang them.

  • I found this cute little purple piggy bank for $3 at Dollarma the other day. While I’m not one for peace signs all over my home decor, I LOVED the quality of the bank and loved the cute little piggy look.

This will go in our little girl’s room, but I think I may spray-paint it first, so that it matches her current decor (they didn’t have anything other than purple at Dollarama).

Before I do that, though, take a look at the sticker I found on the bottom of this piggy bank:

That’s right - this pig was originally sold at Kohl’s for $24.99! Who would pay that price for a piggy bank? $3 is much more reasonable.

  • I love the look of rustic home decor items. I especially love baskets, but unfortunately, Dollarama now only carries a very slim selection. Thankfully, I have discovered a way to make a cute basket from dollar store materials.

    You will need:

    • Bin
    • Woven Cushion Cover
    • Glue Gun

Choose a bin that is no longer than the cushion cover. If you want your bin to be completely covered (inside and out), opt for a bin that is about 2/3 the size of the cushion cover, or smaller. I knew my basket was going to be concealed on the inside, so I chose a larger bin.

Cut the zipper off of the cushion cover and cut down both side seams. Leave the bottom seam intact.

Place your basket in the middle and pull the bottom seam up both sides of the bin, center, and hot glue it in place - like this:

Hot glue along both long edges of the bin, pulling the material snug as you stick it on. As long as you hot glue completely, you will not have to worry about fraying.

Trim the fabric along the short ends, leaving enough to just cover the short sides of the bin. Hot glue these sides on as well.

You are now left with your four corners. Simply put hot glue on the inside corner in a vertical line (to the bottom), and stick the fabric corner down inside your bin.

Repeat with all four corners - and that is it!

These baskets are very easy to make, and look really nice too. You could choose to cover the inside with fabric as well, and use the bin on a hall table to put keys or sunglasses in, or on a shelf with greenery.

It could be used for mail, or bills waiting to be filed. There are so many options!
